The St. Cloud Technical & Community College Cyclones Volleyball team is set to play in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament for the first time in program history this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10-11.

The regular volleyball season wrapped up at the end of October, and the Cyclones have been playing in post-season since. The team’s current record is 23-6 overall and 11-3 in conference. The finished the regular season ranked sixth in the NJCAA national polls with a season high of fourth.

On Saturday, Nov. 4, the team beat Ridgewater for the NJCAA Region XIIIA title in a close match, winning 3-2. This was the first Regional title for Cyclones Volleyball, which became a member of the NJCAA in 2009.

“Making it to the National Tournament was a goal that this team set in preseason. It has been so fun to watch them set goals and work diligently to achieve them,” said Coach Heidi Smith. “I always preach that everyone’s #1 job is to be a great teammate, but this group has really bought into that and appreciates the importance of each member and the collective effort of the group.”

The players this year have been recognized for great play throughout the season. After clinching the Region title, Cyclone Kalli Mathiasen was named Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) Southern Division Player of the Year and named to the MCAC All-Southern Division First Team. Kalie Jergens and Chelsea Schroeder were also named to the First Team, and Anastasia Larson was named to the MCAC All-Southern Division Second Team. Coach Smith was named Co-Coach of the Year at the Regional Tournament.

“We are so proud of the accomplishments of the student-athletes on this year’s Cyclone Volleyball Team,” said Missy Majerus, Director of Campus Life. “They encourage and cheer each other on, and under the leadership of Coach Smith, they emulate what it means to be a Cyclone. All of us at SCTCC wish them the best as they compete for a National Title.”

The Cyclones are seeded #5 in the NJCAA Tournament, which will be held at Rochester Community and Technical College here in Minnesota. The team is set to play its first game at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, against Columbus State from Ohio.
